Luckily getting into Dungeons and Dragons has never been easier, the bare minimum you need is a mobile device with the DNDBeyond app.

Getting the app

If you don’t have it already get the DNDBeyond App.

Using the app

Sign up for a free account with DNDBeyond.

Your DM may invite you to a campaign, if they do they may share content they’ve purchased for you to use. This could include additional races, classes, spells, feats and subclasses.

Creating your first character

First feel free to ask your DM for any assistance you need, or if you’re just toying with the app feel free to ask for advice in our Discord server.

DNDBeyond offers a fully interactive character builder, showing all available options for the race/class you choose.

Feel free to experiment, however your DM may ask you to only use specific races/classes depending on their setting so always be sure to confirm with them.

For a more in-depth dive into using the character builder follow the DNDBeyond guide found here.

I want to use dice, do i need the app?

You can do whatever you’d like! You can create your character in the app but choose to roll physical dice instead of the digital dice on the app.

If you’d like you can even forego using the app entirely and opt for pen & paper, however this would require a much higher level of understanding of the rules to play in this style.

We’d recommend purchasing a Players HandBook (PHB), you can do this digitally on the App or physically in a nearby store such as Eclectic Games (see our Nearby Dungeons page for more info).

What is this 2014 / 2024 stuff?

Dungeons and Dragons has gone through many editions over the years, your DM may not be up to date with the recent 2024 content and may ask that you use the 2014 (Also known as 5th Edition/5e) (Legacy on the app) content instead.

Be sure to ask before creating your character which content your DM prefers if they haven’t already informed you.

As for if you should buy the 2014 or 2024 physical books (Players Handbook (PHB) etc…. thats entirely up to you.

The expectation is that eventually everyone will start using the 2024 content more than the 2014 content however as many DM’s have already invested a lot of time and money into 2014 content and know it very well it may be a while before everyone gets on board with the 2024 edition.
